Who we are
I am a sophomore in high school in Westchester, New York. I started going to camp at age 8 and will work this summer as a counselor in training. There are so many skills that I attribute to my summers at Camp Laurelwood. I became more self-confident, independent, and able to communicate with others, and I learned to become a leader—shoutout to Team Thailand for winning the Big O in 2023! Hearing how camp changed my dad’s life and knowing that he was only able to go because of a generous private donation, I want to share this opportunity with more children of single parents who cannot afford the cost of summer camp.
My grandmother, Harriet Malkin, was a single mother of four boys. She worked as a secretary at the Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven. She was so excited when my dad was able to spend three years at Camp Laurelwood due to the generosity of a private donor, before he started to work there as a counselor. Now he serves as a board member of this non-profit camp whose mission is to provide a meaningful experience to all of its campers.
